JFK’s Terminal 8 rebranded as part of airport’s $19 billion redevelopment
As part of the enormous project to rejuvenate New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, American Airlines, ASUR Airports and Phoenix Infrastructure Group came together to transform Terminal 8. New York City-based Applied Design was responsible for reimagining the terminal’s brand from the ground up, creating a system designed to improve performance across print, digital and environmental applications.
Having reopened in April 2026, JFK’s revamped Terminal 8 boasts more than 60 new dining, retail, duty free and experiential concepts. There are also 20 local brands included, celebrating the spirit of Queens, the New York neighbourhood the airport resides in.
This development forms part of the international airport’s $19 billion transformation, which includes two expanded and modernised terminals, two new terminals and a new airport roadway network. With Terminal 8’s commercial revamp set to cost around $125 million, Applied Design’s role was to evolve its existing identity.
Aiming to infuse the identity with an authentic New York voice, the brand prominently features the number eight throughout, alongside a fresh blue colour palette inspired by the view from a plane window.
Brad Scott, Co-founder and Principal of Applied Design, says, “As a New York City-based agency, reimagining the travel experience for both locals and the millions of visitors who pass through our city was an exciting opportunity. Terminal 8 was designed around the customer experience – and with 60 retail and dining offerings to unify, our challenge was creating a design that felt cohesive, authentic and unmistakably New York.”
