New Engineering Council identity aims to unify profession
The UK’s regulatory body for the engineering profession required a new identity amid significant changes across the sector, including rapid technological advancement and increased public scrutiny. Tasked with improving the Engineering Council’s visibility, creative agency rbl crafted an abstract logo that balances authority with modernity.
As a professional body, the Engineering Council is responsible for setting and maintaining the standards of registered engineers and professional institutions. Its new identity therefore needed to reflect the demands of a rapidly changing industry.
Adam Concar, strategy director at rbl, says, “The engineering sector is solving some of the biggest challenges facing society. The organisations supporting that profession need brands that are equally clear, contemporary and confident in the role they play.”
Built around the strategic platform ‘Standards don’t raise themselves,’ rbl crafted an abstract, monogram-inspired logo. The design reflects themes of precision and simplification that are central to engineering.
Pushing back against the sector’s traditionally conservative approach to brand design, rbl also introduced an energetic, copper-inspired colour palette. Meanwhile, its new tone of voice – centred around ‘The promise of responsible engineering made real’ – is deliberately confident and purposeful.
“The organisation was highly respected, but often understood only as the keeper of the register,” adds Concar. “Our challenge was to reposition the Council not as a passive guardian of standards, but as an active force helping the profession evolve and raise them.”
The new identity has been rolled out across the organisation’s communications, digital platforms and strategic materials.
