Erik Spiekermann, the co-founder of FontShop, has designed typeface families that are used extensively by brands and publications worldwide.

Monotype, a leading global provider of typefaces, has acquired The Berlin and San Francisco offices of FontShop International. As part of the transaction the FontFont typeface library will also come under the ownership of Monotype.

Monotype is looking to grow its customer base, particularly in Germany, widely recognised as a hub of design. Monotype also wants to expand its typeface IP so that it may deliver high-quality branded experiences to its clients.

“As a company dedicated to type, we’re excited about the addition of FontShop, another company with design and type in their DNA,” says Doug Shaw, president and CEO of Monotype. “FontShop’s strong relationships with typeface designers, acute knowledge of the creative professional community, high-quality IP, strong e-commerce business and highly regarded TYPO events, will add immediate value to our business and help us continue on our mission of being the first place to turn for typefaces, technology and expertise.”

The Monotype studio has just developed a new custom type family for Domino’s Pizza, one of the most widely-recognised pizza delivery companies in the world. Domino’s design has evolved recently under the guidance of Crispin Porter +Bogusky (CP+B). The new type family is called Pizza Press, and has been commissioned by CP+B. The typeface acts as a new tool which will help deliver the Domino’s brand and visual identity in a consistent and accessible way.
